Don Piburn was born on a farm near Hastings, Iowa in 1920. He graduated from Shenendoah High School in 1938, after which he became an automobile mechanic. Don Piburn, his wife, and their two sons moved from Bellevue, Nebraska to Boulder, Colorado in 1958. Piburn had a deep interest in cartooning from early childhood, having grown up with other creations such as Popeye, Skeezix, Andy Gump, and Jiggs and Maggie.
